What’s in a Name? (How I Define Homeschool)

I had this really profound, yet brief post written about the ‘separation’ I see within the online homeschool community but then my finger lightly hovered above the reset button and it was gone…..

So now you get an even shorter version here. Does it really matter if we call ourselves homeschoolers or unschoolers? I think not because we still have the most important trait in common: Our kids do not attend public school, for whatever reason. Or am I over-simplifying? I think not. It’s funny because, based on how some people characterized their unschooling approaches, my initial reaction was: “Oh no, that’s too unstructured for us.” But now I’m all like: “Hey, wait a minute now. I was too prejudiced towards unschooling initially but now I think we may just do a mashup of the two.” See how quickly we may have to change our perspectives if/when we judge too quickly? Or is that just me?

Anywho, whether you are homeschooling, unschooling, something in between, or even if your kids are still in public school, I invite you to participate in our monthly #HomeschooChat on Twitter. We tweet the second Sunday of each month from 7:30-8:30 EST.
